Paper stock that can take a gold-leaf title plate
Leaf will not sit on a shiny magazine stock. The sizing beads, the leaf slides, and you spend an afternoon scraping gold out of a title that should have been a night sky. For Doctor Strange–tradition title plates we use a heavy, slightly toothed sheet, sized, then tested with a scrap of the same leaf before the real plate.
Weight matters because a title plate is often the first leaf the reader turns after the cover. Too thin and the mandala shows through from the verso. Too stiff and the folio fights the bind. We keep a shelf of failed tests in Bagendon labelled by year so we do not repeat a stock that dulled overnight.
If the chapter palette is already full of warm reds, we often refuse leaf and use a flat gold gouache instead. Collectors who want sparkle in the NFT crop sometimes argue. The bound chapter still has to be readable by a window. Leaf that blinds the title lettering is a failed plate, even if it glitters on a listing thumbnail.
Bring no paper of your own unless you can leave a sample for a week. Leaf that looks calm on day one can tarnish on day four in a damp porch. Wood Lane is not a damp porch, but we still wait.
